When is it happening?

The government is rolling out Making Tax Digital (MTD) to shake up how taxes are done.

  • Already here: VAT-registered businesses must file digitally.

  • From April 2026: If you’re self-employed or a landlord earning over £50,000, you’ll need to go digital too.

  • From April 2027: That extends to those earning over £30,000.

So, if you’re a freelancer, creative, or small business owner, these changes could be heading your way soon.

What does it mean for you?

In short: no more shoeboxes of receipts or last-minute spreadsheets.

  • You’ll need to keep your records digitally.

  • You’ll need to use software that “talks” to HMRC.

  • Instead of one big yearly tax return, you’ll be sending quarterly updates plus a final check-in at year end.

It’s more reporting, but it also means you’ll always know where you stand with your tax and cash flow.
